Savannah Squares

Savannah was the last leg of our short tour of the South Carolina - Georgia coast. Unlike Charleston and Beaufort, this feels like a big city and is one the largest U.S. seaports. You find some pretty seedy and ragged areas when you venture out of its Historic District.

A major attraction of Savannah are its 22 big squares arranged in a grid throughout the heart of the city by its founders as England's last colony over 250 years ago. Each is a miniature park like this one with benches, flowers, and statues, and surrounded by beautiful old homes. And you can see more Spanish Moss hanging from the trees in these pictures.

Savannah is loaded with history and worth a visit if you're in the area. But Charleston is worth a special trip -- it's a truly unique experience because of the city's charm and the graciousness of its residents.
