Memories of the Old South

Spanish moss drips from Live Oak trees in Beaufort, S.C., a wonderful coastal town near Charleston with beautiful old homes and a colorful history dating from 1711. Prince of Tides, Forrest Gump, and The Big Chill were partially filmed here.

Other Southern memories come from all the interesting food that we tried. Y'all may think that we are preoccupied with eating, but these were dishes at inexpensive down-home restaurants that we encountered with little effort: Pan-fried cornbread with syrup; Collard greens; She-crab soup with dry sherry, the "signature" dish of Charleston; Fried green tomatoes; Bread pudding with brandied hard sauce; Griddle-blackened shrimp with grits and Tasso gravy; Crab cakes and fresh oysters; Sweet ("Southern-style") iced tea with fresh mint; Grilled local red grouper; Pine bark stew; and Pecan pie (of course!).
