The French Quarter

How to convey the spirit of New Orleans' French Quarter in four pictures? First, you would certainly need an early 1800s-style building with beautiful cast iron work on the balconies. This one is the Royal Cafe on Royal Street, where you can eat outdoors on the second floor and enjoy the street scene.

Jackson Square seems to be at the heart of a lot of the outdoor life. Here you can see the south entrance with St. Louis Cathedral in the background. A pickup jazz concert, one of the Square's many attractions, seemed to run non-stop outside the Cathedral and was our most enjoyable jazz experience.

But for many people, authentic New Orleans jazz means the experience late at night at famous Preservation Hall in the lower right Though dimly lit and uncomfortable, you can feel the tradition in a building as well as musicians that seem to be hundreds of years old.
