Jumping Off Cliffs Near San Diego

Whenever we offer San Diego sightseeing advice, we always recommend a quick stop at the Torrey Pines Gliderport – only five minutes off the 5 Freeway on the coast just north of La Jolla. But honestly, there are many days when nothing is happening because the wind isn’t strong enough. On this weekday morning we were lucky to see a lot of paragliding.
Four in the sky
This area claims to be “the most historic aviation site in North America,” with sailplane activity here since the 1920s. For example, in 1930 Charles Lindbergh’s first flight was along these cliffs. It’s one of the few places in the world that hosts all forms of non-powered flight -- sailplanes, radio controlled model aircraft, hang gliders, and paragliders. As we watched, someone was jumping off a cliff or landing every few minutes.
The Gliderport says they are the world’s largest tandem operation, with nearly 150,000 accident-free tandem flights in the last 20 years. Anyone of any age can paraglide or hang glide side-by-side here with an instructor. Prices for such tandem flights are $175 to $225.
